TARGET OF WAR game review

TARGET OF WAR game review

The Russians and Americans trade threats and bluffs, although neither wants to get involved in a real conflict while the Chinese are acting uncontrollably. Unwilling to move large numbers of troops to Berlin because of the escalation in Vietnam, the United States deploys NATO field nuclear weapons instead.

The Russians call the American bluff, and a limited nuclear exchange takes place. Watkins deliberately ignores the effect of the bombs on America and Russia. Instead, he "documents" the side effects in England, which has 75 or so targets of military consequence.Based on the children's book by writer Michael Foreman and featuring the voice of Kate Winslet (Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), this British animated adventure tells the story of three young chums who find themselves fighting the Germans in the First World War. As the battles rage, the young men on both sides of the conflict suddenly and unexpectedly strike up a soccer match on Christmas Day. Matthew Tobey, Rovi

BEGINNERS GUIDE – MODIFIED

Beginners can be easily repelled from the world of Nerf gun modding by seeing a modification "write-up" that seems complicated. Many modification write-ups do seem confusing at first. However, modding a Nerf gun isn't very hard--It simply takes knowledge of how a Nerf gun works and how a mod should be executed. With this knowledge, modifying Nerf guns is quite simple.

This Instructable will introduce you to the vast world of Nerf gun modifications. It covers basic concepts of Nerf gun modifications written for complete beginners--those who are interested in Nerf guns but unsure of how or where to start.

POKEMON HUNTER game review

POKEMON HUNTER game review

Roughly 15 years ago, Pokemon popularized monster collecting and battling, and became the genre’s standard. Since its success, consoles have been flooded by watered-down versions hoping to ride on Pikachu’s coattails, but these imitations rarely strive for breakthroughs or innovation.

NTT Resonant, a Japanese game developer, has challenged the genre standard with its mid-November release of Hunter Island for iOS.

play POKEMON HUNTER game

Familiar Territory

In terms of story, Hunter Island doesn’t offer anything we haven’t already seen. The game starts with you becoming a full fledge ‘Hunter,’ and with this honor you get to choose your starter Arkadion. You will then use your Arkadion to battle and capture other Arkadions. Sound familiar?

As you level up and capture more and more Arkadions, you will soon find yourself protecting small villages from bandits, fighting alongside a prince in a political coup, and even pursuing hooded figures using forbidden magic. Once again, not terribly original, but hang in there, we are getting to the good stuff.

Monster battles…that are fun?

I know it sounds crazy, but Hunter Island has perfected monster battling to the point where Pokemon had better take notice. Hunters are allowed to use up to three Arkadions at the same time which means one big thing for me: no Magikarp situations. Remember how awesome it was to get Gyarados, but how awful it was to constantly switch Magikarp in and out of battles? Well now, if you have an Akradion as worthless as a Magikarp, you can match it with two of your stronger Arkadions to make leveling up a whole lot easier. This may not be innovative, but I still love it.

Hunter Island makes full use of the touch screen in its battle system and this makes the fights far more entertaining. Instead of simply selecting which move you want to do by pressing a button, you simply slide your finger across the Arkadion you wish to attack. The attack you choose is determined by the direction you slide your finger. This is a far more enjoyable and involving battle system that I hope to see in more games.

Finally, what makes Hunter Island so darn good is its time unit ordering system. Instead of the typical PP seen in almost every RPG, attacks will cost each Arkadion ‘Time Units.’ These then determine when your Arkadion will be able to attack next. Think of it like this: your big attacks will cost you an absurd amount of TU, whereas your smaller ones will only cost you a few. Using your most powerful move will do lots of damage, but it will also send you to the very back of the line. You could however, use a lighter attack and be sent to the middle of the line.

This TU ordering system really adds to the strategy and makes you actually think about what you are going to do. This in combination with a far more engaging and entertaining battle system, monsters that level up and evolve faster, and an all-around more engrossing experience makes Hunter Island a win in my book.

But are the monsters cute?

Hunter Island has done an incredible job with their character and monster designs. The Arkadions look great and have a really polished look to them. There may not be any iconic characters like Pikachu to come out of this game, but there are many Arkadions that will still be memorable to any who play the game.

The biggest flaw, if you can call it that, is the lack of real animation. In battles, the Arkadions are simply still images that float above a landscape backdrop. This does not really take away from the experience, but it would have been nice to have a little bit of animation.

The Verdict? One of the best dollars I’ve ever spent

Hunter Island is phenomenal. It’s that simple. The game is huge, and will easily offer 50-60 hours of gameplay. Aside from the online battles being a bit mismatched, and lack of animation, I found it very difficult to come up with any real issues with the game.

GUITAR WILSON game review

GUITAR WILSON game review

It is the spring of 1948. In the still cool evenings of Pittsburgh's Hill district, familiar sounds fill the air. A rooster crows. Screen doors slam. The laughter of friends gathered for a backyard card game rises just above the wail of a mother who has lost her son. And there's the sound of the blues, played and sung by young men and women with little more than a guitar in their hands and a dream in their hearts. August Wilson's Guitars is the sixth chapter in his continuing theatrical saga that explores the hope, heartbreak, and heritage of the African-American experience in the twentieth century. The story follows a small group of friends who gather following the untimely death of Floyd "Schoolboy" Barton, a local blues guitarist on the edge of stardom. Together, they reminisce about his short life and discover the unspoken passions and undying spirit that live within each of them.(less)

DOSAGES FINAL VERSION game review

This project isn't for a mass market, I'm using the arcade to show off my game for my university course.
Measuring drug dosages is a problem for college students of all specialties, but the University of Stavanger in Norway is the first to propose a game to help its students learn to calculate the proper amounts.

Play DOSAGES FINAL VERSION game

Well, some students, anyway. For those learning to be nurses, drug calculations are one of the most important parts of the curriculum; considering most medicines can damage or kill you if you receive too high a dose, it's a requirement we can get behind. Problem is, if you make even a single mistake on the relevant exam, you fail and you're barred from working as a nurse. At UiS, the fail percentage has been between 36 and 39 over the past few years. Other colleges can see rates as high as fifty percent. It's a conundrum: how do you train students to pass such an important examination?

The answer, as we all know, is video games.

COLOUR UNBALANCE game review

COLOUR UNBALANCE game review

There are many games that I have seen people talking about long before they are released, but none so much as Commands and Colors: Ancients (GMT Games, 2006 - Richard Borg). Richard Borg's light wargaming system that he introduced in BattleCry and then advanced in Memoir '44 was finally being produced by a war game company. This caused a level of excitement, as people were wondering if Mr. Borg would add a bit of complexity to the system to satisfy those who thought Memoir was too "light". For me personally, I loved Memoir - it being in my top ten games - and was certainly eager to play another game using the same system. Then, over a year ago, I heard that GMT was going to be using cardboard standups in the game, and that simply doused my interest in the game, as I really liked the high production values of Days of Wonder (producers of Memoir '44.)

SUNSHINEHEART game review

SUNSHINEHEART game review

Sunshine Heart: 10 Reasons Why This Game Changing Cardio Device Company Could Be Acquired for $50 share

Play SUNSHINEHEART game

#1 Biotech pick for the next 12-24 months.

#1) Huge Market Opportunity:  Sunshine Heart (SSH) is targeting the enormous New York Heart Association's (NYHA) Class III and ambulatory Class IV Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) market. This is a huge, unmet, untapped opportunity with approximately 1.5m patients in the US and another 3.7M patients in the EU. If the Company merely penetrates 10% of this market, the opportunity could reach over $5bln.

#2) C-Pulse :  The C-Pulse Heart Assist System is a game changing device that has three major distinct advantages over the current device based therapies offered to Class III CHF patients:

1) Zero contact with the patent's bloodstream.

2) Much less invasive implantation method.

3) Ability to temporarily disconnects the device.

The Company has already completed a twenty patient single arm feasibility study and presented six month data on fifteen of the twenty patients in November 2011. The data showed that  twelve of the fifteens patients saw a reduction in NYHA class, seven showed a one class reduction and two patients showed a two class reduction in class. Astoundingly, two of the patients improved so much that they were able to permanently disconnect from the C-Pulse device. Recently the Company announced that "two additional patients have been identified as potential candidates to be weaned from the device based on significant symptomatic improvement".

On November 20, 2102, Sunshine Heart received unconditional FDA approval for the C-Pulse(R) system's U.S. pivotal trial. The Company estimates enrollment for the event-driven pivotal trial will take approximately 2.5 years. The primary endpoint of the trial will be reduction in worsening heart failure events leading to hospitalization, advanced heart failure therapies and heart failure related mortality. A one year safety follow-up is expected. The lead investigator for the trial will be Dr. William T. Abraham, Director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at The Ohio State University Medical Center.

On May 9, 2103, Sunshine Heart announced the implant of the first patient in the European OPTIONS HF C-Pulse System Multi center Study. The post market study is intended to treat patients with moderate to severe heart failure. "We are extremely pleased to announce the implant of the first patient at the German Heart Institute - Berlin in our European multi center post market study," said Dave Rosa, Sunshine Heart's Chief Executive Officer. "In particular, we are encouraged to see early success of our next generation cuff in its ability to improve the ease of implant and allow for better predictability of proper securement. We anticipate the activation of additional sites in the coming months and look forward to updating the market with our progress as enrollment proceeds."

#3) Fully Implantable C-Pulse  A fully implantable device, using existing transcutaneous energy transfer (TET) has already been proven in animal studies. The Company has recently executed an agreement with Cirtec MedicalSystems, a leader in advanced engineering and manufacturing capabilities, specializing in minimally invasive surgical and delivery devices for development of a fully implantable C Pulse Pump. The Company is targeting the completion of a chronic animal trial in late 4Q13 for the pump and intends to provide more information as progress is made.

#4) Re-hospitalization Rates  In October 2012, the Affordable Care Acts Hospital Readmission Reduction Program was instituted and includes a penalty system to incentivize hospitals to ensure their heart failure related re-hospitalization rates meet a defined benchmark rate of less than 24.7% at 30 days. If hospitals exceed this benchmark, they risk repayment reimbursements as a penalty. In the Company's pilot study, at least 17 of the 20 patients had been hospitalized due to worsening heart failure in the year prior to receiving the C-Pulse implant. Post implant, the re-hospitalization rate was only 15%, at 12 months. In  addition, the average number of days stayed in the hospital was nine compared to nineteen for patients who received LVADS. As a note, the patients who received the C-Pulse device using the minimally invasive manner vs thoracotomy, only required a hospital stay of four days.

#5) Management: All proven winners whom have vast experience in grooming companies for a successful buyout. The management team is led by Mr. David Rosa, CEO.  Prior to joining Sunshine Heart, Mr. Rosa was Vice President of Global Marketing for Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology at St. Jude Medical, Inc. While at St. Jude, he directed the launch of twenty seven new products within the Company's cardiovascular division.

William Peters, MD, serves as Medical Director and Chief Technical Officer invented the proprietary C-Pulse technology and served as Sunshine Heart’s initial CEO upon co-founding the Company in 1999. In addition to C-Pulse, Dr. Peters has developed a number of other successful cardiac technology innovations, including an endovascular cardiopulmonary bypass system for minimally invasive cardiac surgery, which was commercialized by Heartport Inc., a NASDAQ-listed company that later was acquired by Johnson & Johnson.

The Board of Directors is headed by Mr. John Erb who was appointed Chairman on September 13, 2012. "Mr. Erb currently serves as the Chairman of Vascular Solutions (NASDAQ:VASC), Chairman ofOsprey Medical (ASX:OSP), and current Chairman and CEO of U.S. based Cardia Access. He has been part of recent acquisitions such as SenoRx (C.R. Bard), CryoCath Technologies(Medtronic Inc.), CHF Solutions (Gambro) and IntraTherapeutics (Sulzer Medica). Mr. Erb has also served in Senior Management roles with Schneider Worldwide, a leader in the cardiovascular space prior to its acquisition by Boston Scientific".The other members have significant connections with major global medical device companies, including; Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic and Boston Scientific

#6) Unmet Need  Despite the current therapies (LVADs, Pacemakers, CRT-D and drug therapies) heart failure morbidity and mortality remain high. Five year mortality rates range from 15-50%, depending on the severity of the disease. There is a huge need for additional therapies, especially for patients with advanced heart failure. Current devices only work to slow the progression of the condition and either shock the heart or perform the work for the heart. The C-Pulse system employs extra-aortic counter pulsation technology which actually reduces the workload of the left ventricle and increases the blood flow to the heart thereby allowing the muscle to undergo a level of recovery.

#7) Potential Suitors Currently, the M&A activity in the biotech sector is at running at a fevered pace and the market is richly rewarding companies that engage in strategic acquisitions. Sunshine Heart is trading at an absurd valuation and would be an ideal fit for many players in the cardiac device space. The C-Pulse system has serious potential to become the standard of care in the massive and fast growing Class III and ambulatory Class IV CHF market. There are many potential suitors, among them; Thoratec, Heartware, St. Jude, Medtronics and Johnson and Johnson, all of which are most likely salivating over this opportunity right now.

#8) Strategic Investor  A Little known fact to most investors is that according to page 91, of the S-1 filed on August 8, 2102 the Company has a "strategic investor"

A strategic investor, which is not a current stockholder of our company, has indicated an interest in purchasing approximately $3 million of our common stock in this offering at the public offering price. However, because this indication of interest is not a binding agreement or commitment to purchase, the underwriters may determine to sell more, less or no shares in this offering to this investor, or this investor may determine to purchase more, less or no shares in this offering. The underwriters will receive the same discounts and commissions from any shares of our common stock purchased by this strategic investor as they will from any other shares of our common stock sold to the public in this offering. In connection with this investment, we intend to enter into an agreement with this investor pursuant to which it will have the right to designate a board observer, who would be entitled to attend all meetings of our board of directors, and all committees thereof, in each case subject to customary exclusions, as well as the right to review certain of our clinical and regulatory data. The investor would maintain these observation and inspection rights for two years following the date we receive approval from the FDA to sell our C-Pulse System in the United States so long as it beneficially owns at least 0% of the number of shares purchased in this offering.
#9) Poison Pill  On June 14, 2013, Sunshine Heart adopted a stockholder rights plan  and declared a dividend distribution of one right  for each outstanding share of Sunshine Heart. The Rights Plan is intended to protect the Company and its stockholders from efforts to obtain control of Sunshine Heart that its Board of Directors determines are not in the best interests of the Company and its stockholders, and to enable all stockholders to realize the long-term value of their investment in Sunshine Heart. The Rights Plan is not intended to interfere with any merger, tender or exchange offer or other business combination approved by the Board of Directors. Obviously, the fact that they implemented this Rights plan signifies that there are plenty of potential suitors sniffing around the Company.

#10) Market Cap  At the same stage of development, Heartware (HTWR) (current market cap of $1.5b, $49.2 Q1 revenues) was valued at $200m vs Sunshine Heart's current market cap of $93m. Sunshine Heart is targeting a much larger CHF market segment ($5 bln) than Heartware, at $7.50, SSH is trading at an unprecedented level in relation to its long term potential.  Many recent acquirers of developmental biotech firms have paid in excess of $1bln for assets with much less potential. What most investors don't realize is that Sunshine Heart only has 12.3mln shares outstanding, so while a takeover at $50 share might seem outlandish, it would still only value the company at approximately $600mln.

Conclusion: In the near term, the excitement will start to build for Sunshine Heart's shares as additional patients are weaned off the C-Pulse system (i.e."cured"), new clinical trial sites are activated in the U.S., the completed feasibility study data is published in a major medical journal, clinical updates are given on the open label European study, progress is given on the development of the fully implantable version of the device and additional research houses initiate coverage. If the C-Pulse system were an investigational new drug, (based upon the early feasibility study, which results should only get better with device enhancements etc,)  the pundits would be hailing this as one of the biggest potential blockbuster drugs of all time. I believe the reason Sunshine Heart is currently trading at such an obscene low valuation is that investors simply think that for the time being, this is "dead money". They believe they will have to wait many years for the phase three trial results to report and therefore will have to wait for a corresponding time for a significant rise in share price. I think this is a huge miscalculation as I believe one of the big players in the field will step in (possibly causing a bidding war) well in advance of the phase three trial readout and make a takeover bid of at least $50 share/$600m. The Company wont be able to refuse it.

Disclosure: I am long SSH. I wrote this article myself,  this is NOT investment advice, it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it. I have no business relationship with Sunshine Heart.

This app had stellar graphics. From the menus to the startup screen to the actual game/garage scene, they all looked very well composed. The app was fluid and I never had trouble knowing where to go. It felt fast-paced and the radar power-ups were convenient and easy to use.

Play FAST CARS PUZZLE game

It would be nice for the application to have had a menu or escape button when moving to the next round because I didn't want to keep playing sometimes but it would force me to tap through. Also, having a greater selection of cars (4 at a time) would make the game much more challenging. I would've liked to have seen more cars matched up as well because I kept getting the same pairs multiple times.

This is one of the best apps I have ever tested. It felt like a real game and most of the matches between cars were pretty tough to figure out. Although the game had issues of similar car pairs being displayed more than once, the true spirit of the game and the fastest car aspect was brilliantly displayed.

1. The game is great, I never came across such a game concept. And I have to say it's very challenging.
2. This is also an educational app. I payed it with children and in a pub with my friends. And in bough situations I had a lot of fun. The game refers to a wide range of ages.
3. The amount of categories is tremendous ( I purchased the full version because I enjoy the game).

Crystal game review

Crystal game review

rystal Version is the most up-to-date of Nintendo's Pokémon games, but it isn't exactly the sequel that fans have been anticipating. Similar to Pokémon Yellow and its Red/Blue brethren, Crystal is merely an update to the Gold and Silver versions that preceded it. As such, those already knee-deep in the Gold/Silver series won't find much of interest in Pokémon Crystal. However, if you have not already upgraded from the older Red/Blue/Yellow series, or you happen to be a total Pokémon neophyte, now is an excellent time to take the plunge.

Play Crystal game

Just like Gold and Silver before it, Pokémon Crystal offers 251 different Pocket Monsters to collect, trade, and battle. As a trainer en route to the Pokémon League, you'll have the opportunity to meet and acquire a majority of these lovable animals--usually by searching in tall grass, hunting at night, or by breeding at the day care. Rare Pokémon--creatures so strong that you get only one shot to battle and capture them--can often be found hiding within ancient ruins or grazing in particular areas at various times throughout the week.

Although Pokémon Crystal theoretically includes the entire menagerie of Pokémon contained within both the Gold and Silver versions of the game, choices you make along the way can (and will) eliminate your chances of capturing specific monsters. Similarly, some Pokémon, such as Squirtle, Mewtwo, Charmander, and Bulbasaur, are exclusive to the older Red/Blue/Yellow series and are impossible to acquire via solitary means. For these reasons, if you intend to complete Prof. Oak's Pokédex, trading between friends remains an essential aspect of the Pokémon phenomenon.

Play Crystal game

When you consider different male and female variations, or the time spent trying to hatch rare eggs at the day care, it could take months just to complete even half the Pokédex. Thankfully, Pokémon Crystal offers a somewhat compelling role-playing adventure in addition to its core collecting mechanics.

Starting out as New Bark Town's latest rookie trainer, you and a single Pokémon (Cyndaqil, Totodile, or Chikorita) will embark on a quest to challenge the Elite Four at the Pokémon League. Before you can realize this destiny though, you'll need gym badges--lots of them. In all, you'll need to earn the badges of 16 different gym leaders throughout the continents of Johto and Kanto--a journey that will eventually take you to 18 different towns and through countless ancient landmarks. In addition to the helpful residents you'll meet during your travels, there are also approximately 500 other rookie trainers waiting to challenge you as you journey from town to town.

Suffice it to say, battle is also an important aspect of Pokémon. The game uses a turn-based battle system where the Pokémon in your care do all of the actual fighting. For each turn, you may perform a single attack or use a single item. Pokémon can memorize only four different attacks at any given time, however, so if they run out of PP for a particular move or are nearly unconscious, you can always swap them with another Pokémon in your pack. Although you're allowed to bring only six Pokémon into battle, PCs located at every Pokémon Center let you store approximately 250 additional Pokémon for later use. Pokémon will learn new attacks as they grow and evolve, but you can also acquire additional skills, in the form of TM and HM items, after hallmark battles or from special shops scattered throughout Johto and Kanto.

Play Crystal game

In addition to the 15 original Pokémon types (normal, fire, water, grass, bug, ground, electric, flying, fighting, ice, dragon, psychic, ghost, poison, rock), two new types were introduced to the mix by the Gold and Silver series: steel and dark. Pokémon Crystal contributes nothing new in this respect, but the strategic pairing of strengths, weaknesses, or stalemates based upon these innate proclivities remains a clever and enjoyable aspect of gameplay.

For players upgrading from the original Red/Blue/Yellow series, Pokémon Crystal contains a few notable enhancements to its item and tools systems. Foremost of these, Pokémon in your party can now carry items into battle. Berries, plucked from trees, automatically cure illness or status ailments, while special store-bought seeds can either augment or dampen a Pokémon's intrinsic talents. There are even items, such as rare stones and flower-print mail, that can evolve a Pokémon when it's traded to a friend via link cable. To carry the items you collect, you will have an in-game backpack that contains four different pockets with enough space to hold 20 items in each, and it has a separate HM/TM pocket that has room for an unlimited number of HM and TM skills. A PokéGear device attached to your pack gives you access to a variety of useful tools, including a comprehensive world map, a radio for entertainment purposes, and a cellular phone for keeping in touch with the game's many characters.

If you already own Pokémon Gold or Pokémon Silver, much of the information covered in this review is old news. In fact, the differences the Crystal version exhibits over its Gold and Silver counterparts are so subtle that you may never notice many of them. Of the most significant, the addition of a female character gives you the opportunity to choose an onscreen persona that is uniquely feminine. Within the game itself, there are numerous picayune visual embellishments to observe, the most obvious of which are new, brief prefight battle taunts. They're not spectacular by any means, but watching a Machoke flex its muscles or a Cubone juggle its bone before going into battle is somewhat delightful.

In terms of gameplay modifications, besides changing where and when Pokémon tend to appear, Nintendo has made a few useful adjustments to the game's radio and cell phone items. Now, when you add a trainer's cell number to your phone book, they may call and offer free items or advice in addition to his incessant pleas for a rematch. Similarly, Buena's Password Show is a new radio broadcast that can net you all sorts of spiffy big-budget prizes--provided you tune in daily and don't mind hightailing it to Goldenrod City every once in a while. Other improvements include a more pronounced Suicune (#245) subplot, a new rooftop bargain shop in Goldenrod City, the addition of a Poké Seer fortune-teller, and a much, much, much easier method of acquiring the 251st Pokémon, Celebi.

Like Gold and Silver before it, Pokémon Crystal also boasts a number of gimmicks that enhance and broaden the game's overall variety. A built-in time clock keeps track of the date and time, which allows the sun to rise and set in real time within the game. Certain Pokémon come out only at night or on specific days of the week. Similarly, a number of key events within the game also occur only on particular days or at specified times.

Play flash Crystal game

A revamped Pokédex lets you sort Pokémon by either type or number and includes a handy search-by-type feature. If you have a Game Boy Printer, you can also use the Pokédex to print pictures of the Pokémon you've encountered. In addition to battling friends one-on-one across a link cable, with the Game Boy Color's infrared port you can transfer mystery gifts between another Gold/Silver/Crystal version of the game or with Nintendo's Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS pocket virtual pet. Although designed for the Game Boy Color, the game works just fine when played on a Game Boy Advance--albeit without infrared capabilities, since Nintendo's latest system lacks the required infrared hardware.

It's not a brand-new game by any means, but for those who are new to Pokémon or have yet to upgrade from the Red/Blue/Yellow series, Pokémon: Crystal Version offers a great deal of value for the investment involved. As for those who already own the Gold or Silver versions of the game, unless you absolutely need to snag Celebi, there is no reason why you should even consider buying Pokémon Crystal.

Chrome users are all a-twitter over Chromed Bird, the free Google Chrome extension that brings Twitter to your toolbar. It's a safe bet that most people think mobile when they tweet--smartphones, PDAs and such--but most users also access and manage their Twitter accounts from their desktops or laptops. Chrome fans will find that Chromed Bird makes Twitter even easier to use.

We downloaded and installed Chromed Bird, which placed the small Twitter-like Chromed Bird icon on our Chrome toolbar and opened its setup interface in a new tab. We signed in to our Twitter account, and Chromed Bird authorized itself with the Web site. Next we clicked the Chromed Bird icon. A pop-up appeared in the corner with a compact Twitter interface already signed into our account and topped by an expandable panel with the familiar character-limited tweet-composing field, URL shortener, counter, and Tweet It! button. A small toolbar held entries labeled Log Out, Options, Refresh, and Suspend, with the larger tabbed Lists toolbar below. This gave us access to our tabs labeled Unified, Home, our personal page, DMs, and other lists, as well as drop-down tab labeled Select a List. We right-clicked the toolbar and selected Add Lists Tab and Add Search Tab and quickly added a search field and a new Lists tab. We right-clicked the DMs tab and selected Hide Tab, which removed the tab from view; right-clicking the toolbar and selecting Show DMs Tab brought it back. We were also able to completely remove any tab easily and restore it with a few clicks. Next we opened Chromed Bird's options, which offered extensive choices for configuring how the pop-up looks and behaves as well as options for notifications, timelines, the URL shortener, image and microblogging services, and Advanced settings.

    SWIMMING SHARK game

    SWIMMING SHARK game

One game that my team's swimmers love to play is sharks and minnows. This can work anywhere as long as you can keep swimmers safe and have two separate target areas, called safe zones in this game:

A few swimmers are selected to be sharks, and they get to roam around the central part of the pool.
The rest ofthe swimmers line up in a safe zone on one side of the swimming pool (the minnows).
We leave all lane lines in the pool and the last line on each side of the swimming pool are the safe zones. Depending upon the skill level of the group playing, we expand or contract the size of the safe zone and the size of the area that is "legally" useable for crossing between safe zones.

On a signal, the minnows must swim to the opposite side of the pool to reach the other safe zone.
If a shark touches any part of a minnow while any part of a minnow is above water, the minnow is caught and becomes a shark.

When only a few minnows are left, the sharks and minnows switch and we play again.
Sometimes we only give swimmers a certain number of seconds to get from one side to the other, and add a "catch a breath" safe zone in the middle of the pool.
    Swim On!

    BLUE SAMURAI game review

    BLUE SAMURAI game review

I was pretty excited about this game when I heard it was being developed as I am a fan of the series. Upon reading several reviews such as IGN, GamesRadar and GameSpy I almost passed on getting it. It seemed that yet again something I liked had a poor game made based on it. I bought Afro Samurai anyway and man am I glad I did, here's why. First off let me start by correcting a few erroneous errors in some of the reviews I read that lead to their scores.

GamesRadar claimed that the instruction manual listed the wrong command for dashing. The manual lists clicking the left stick to dash. This is correct. While moving Afro in any direction clicking the left stick results in…guess what….a dash. Clicking it while stationary does nothing. Like many other action games with a run button you have to click it in conjunction with a directional input.

Gamespy noted a “game-stopping bug” that prevent ropes from being cut in the game. There is no bug. The ropes in question can only be cut by using the focus mode and executing the perfect slice maneuvers…along with aiming the slice to cut properly with the analog stick. It can't be done by button mashing. It's a precise cut that requires you to use the perfect slice system.

The IGN review bugged the daylights out of me as it was really off base (and I usually understand IGN's reviews) IGN claimed to be able to get through the entire game by “alternating attacks and mashing buttons”. This same review claims an overly frustrating and cheap Brother 6 boss battle. Well it shouldn't be frustrating if the game can simply be beat with mindless button mashing I thought. If it's frustrating it really can't be so simple, right? Read on. This battle I did 3 times to test. The 1st time it took me 10 minutes after I died during phase 3 on my first attempt (I was not using the two bears they give you to restore your health during the battle). I then proceeded to kill him in 3 minutes both of the next two times without using the bears. How? Using a dash attack (An attack that can't be done by mashing buttons). I dash attacked Brother 6 and then proceeded with a simple combo of XXXX until brother 6 knocked me away. As soon as I hit the ground and roll recovered I dashed right back in with a dash attack and interrupted his attack animation. This dash hit stuns him and then I use XXXX again. I repeated this pattern for ALL of the three phases. 3 minutes using one dash attack, one combo and no bears to recover life. Hardly frustrating or worth mentioning as “cheap”. If anything, I was cheap by abusing one move and one combo.

Several reviews said there is no way to track XP as you progress or what moves you'll unlock. False. When checking your moves list (something many reviewers openly admit not doing) there will be moves with white slashes through them. These are locked. There will also be moves with blue slashes through them. These moves are the ones you're gaining experience on. When the slash fills completely blue you'll gain that move when the screen next flashes “level up”.

    Play BLUE SAMURAI game

Another review mentioned that you have to click R3 (nearly an industry standard) to re-center your camera. The complaint was that doing so removes your fingers from the buttons rendering you defenseless. This would hold true if the block/parry button (defense right?) was a face button…but it's not. It's the R-trigger which can be held while pressing the re-center camera button if that is an issue for someone. So you're not defenseless. Also the inverted X-axis is listed as a major issue in some reviews. To anyone who has been gaming long enough or who has played titles from regions other than the US an inverted X-axis on the camera is not new. It's not prevalent here in the states, but it's been around for a while in a few titles here and abroad. It should be old hat and easy to adapt to. And it's not game breaking either. Like learning any other controls in any other game it should be factored into the learning curve….not listed as something to drop the score or the opinion of the game...unless you're a gamer that has issues learning new controls. If that's the case then be fore warned the camera is inverted and cannot be changed.

So now that the air is cleared of some incorrect stuff let's get to the review.

Presentation, graphics and sound are great with some minor issues. The game has a definite anime/comic look to it with comic paneling and cutaways to coincide with the cel-shaded looks. The menus are simple and easy to navigate and the load screens are animated instead of static. The music really gets you pumped to play. There are very minor instances of slow down and clipping is very noticeable when it happens. But oddly enough the slow down blends into the game since you have a slow down mechanic of your own. So it often ends up appearing stylistic even though it is a technical concern with too many body parts and too much blood animating on the screen. The moves list is very well done as it demonstrates the commands needed for each move and even includes a video demo of it so that you can see the timing involved and know what the move should look like when done properly. The game is over flowing with violence, blood, gore and nudity just like the series. It is very much an adult atmosphere. Parents, you have been warned.

The gameplay is very good, almost textbook. Actually it's not almost textbook it IS textbook with pages borrowed (read: STOLEN) from other textbooks.

    Play BLUE SAMURAI game

You have the near endless array of combos in the vein of games such as God of War, Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. You have an upgrade system that adds new moves to your repertoire based on experience…which is gained by killing enemies. These upgrades include moves such as reflecting bullets, fragmenting bullets, the ability to execute multiple precision cuts in a row, the ability to cut through more enemies with each strike, etc. You have your standard attacking combos, throw moves, combos that link into a throw animation, dodging moves, blocks/parries/counters, etc. You can instantly link many of the games combos together to make near infinite combos, you can launch and juggle enemies and pressing block cancels your attack animations to put you in a blocking stances or to parry instantly….well most attacks. Some of the higher powered moves can't be interrupted. Bigger damage, bigger risk.

A special feature of Afro Samurai is the innovative…ok I mean overdone focus mode that allows you to slow the game down. What Afro does different with this old mechanic is give you manual control of where to attack when in this mode. Focus mode slows the game down and gives access to other moves most notable of which are the perfect slices. These moves allow you to sever enemy body parts precisely by aiming the slices with the left analog stick and choosing horizontal or vertical slices based on the button you press. When Afro's focus meter is full you can press a button which puts Afro into overfocus mode. For those familiar with the old Punisher game this will sound VERY familiar. The screen turns black and white and everything slows down. All of Afro's attacks are now one hit kills on most enemies. It's essentially a manual smart bomb.

    Play BLUE SAMURAI game

Speaking of Afro's focus meter an observant gamer will notice that there are no meters displayed in-game. Afro Samurai joins the legions of recent games opting to use a HUDless system. Thankfully it works well. Afro's life is displayed on his body and this also applies to opponents. As characters near death a red aura starts to show on the body. The closer to death they are the darker and more apparent the red glow becomes. Attached to the hilt of Afro's sword is a medallion. This is his focus meter. When the medallion has a black aura around it Afro's meter is empty and he needs to score some combos to increase it. As the meter fills up the medallion begins to flash with a pulsating white aura. When the medallion has a constant solid white aura the focus meter is full and the aforementioned overfocus mode is available.

The platforming in Afro Samurai is passable and only so because of one key issue. It's inconsistent. In games like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry the platforming moves such as running on walls can be done at any time. In Afro Samurai these moves can only be done in certain places and at first you can't tell where. There are subtle clues like level geometry and flashing ledges to give hints but even these are more questionable than they should be.

Replay value depends. For fans of the series, you'll be playing this a lot as it feels like a good representation of the source material. For those who like a hyper violent action game with slick visuals and responsive controls…you'll be loving this. For those who can't get passed the camera inversion, avoid this game. For those that have problems with pattern recognition and timing, avoid this game as that's what the boss battles consist of mostly and to a lesser extent the battles with the weaker enemies.

Overall I give the game a solid 8 out of 10. It's not pushing the envelope in any given area, its best features are ripped from or inspired by other games and it has enough minor issues that prevent it from achieving A status. I'd rank it as an 8 even if it wasn't an Afro Samurai game, but I also won't rank it higher just because it is based on a series I like.
